Carter is 18 months old

As of yesterday, Carter is officially 18 months old. This means something big in our LDS culture -- it means he gets to start nursery! He will attend the nursery class with the other 18 month olds to 3 year olds every Sunday while we attend our block of church meetings. A big step for all of us. We know he'll enjoy the toys, lessons, coloring, snacks, music, etc. We just pray he's nice to the other kids!

Last night we had a little gathering in the name of Carter's half birthday, but mostly as an excuse to have our family & friends over for a party! We didn't get any pictures of our gathering, but we had a fun time with Joe, Claudia, Brad, Brittney, Dan, Ben, and Sherrie over for Taco Soup.

We went to the pediatrician today for Carter's 18 month well visit. Lately, everyone comments on how tall Carter is for his age, so we weren't surprised to learn that he's in about the 95th percentile for height at 34 inches. At 27 lbs, he is pretty average for weight, about 50-75th percentile.

The pediatrician really grilled us. One thing we weren't prepared for was to have him ask us how many words Carter says. We had no idea what to estimate for this. We told the doctor that Carter pretty much parrots us all day, repeating or at least attempting to repeat almost everything we say. The doctor asked if CJ at least knew 15-20 words and we said yes, at least, and that's not counting the signs he knows. Well, we came home and began a list of the words he says and/or signs every day on a regular basis. Within an hour or so, we had come up with a list of about 75 words! We didn't include any words we hadn't been hearing him repeat on a regular basis. Since CJ is my first child, and pride is naturally occurring at rates we sometimes underestimate, I had to fight off a strong urge all day to call up that doctor and set him straight! Can you picture the nurses rolling their eyes and me demanding to have a note made in his file that he's a GENIUS?! Don't worry, I didn't call. Word list to follow in a separate post.

In the meantime, enjoy this cute picture of our 18 month old little boy (taken today)!

While Momma is sick...

This is my constant view. I am sick as a dog, sacked out on the couch today. CJ is certainly taking advantage of the opportunity to run wild. I think just about every toy in the house is on the living room floor today. And whenever he hears me blow my nose, he has to follow suite. He doesn't know how to actually blow his nose yet, so he instead emits a strange low growl as he wipes his nose with the tissues! What a silly boy! I also loved that when a stream of afternoon light was coming in the window, Carter was trying to capture it. He kept sticking his hands up into it and examining the light on his hands. It's so much fun to watch him discover the world!

Playing With Blocks

Carter received these blocks from Shane's parents for Christmas and he loves them. We can't keep them out because they would constantly be all over the place. We hide them in his closet and get them out once a day or every other day so that he still gets excited about them. He especially loves knocking over towers that we build for him, dumping the blocks all out at once, and putting them back in the container through the shape-sorting lid.

Good Times (right???)

These pictures aren't very exciting, but they say a lot to me. Today, Carter found a brand new almost completely full tube of his eczema cream and bit through it in a matter of a couple of minutes while I was in the kitchen. I looked in to check on him (because it had gotten too quiet for me to be at ease) and there is Carter with the tube in his mouth and cream all over his face ad hands. He sees me and runs behind the arm of the couch and begins wiping the cream from his hands onto the couch. Great. Oh well for the couch. I was worried because the stuff is obviously not supposed to be eaten and it appeared that the tube was substantially less full than it should have been (see pictures of undisturbed new tube vs. new tube that's been attacked by Carter and notice beautiful teeth marks)! I proceeded to try to clean as much out of Carter's mouth and off of his face as I could, and then I called poison control -- yes, that's the second time in the last 30 days we have needed their expertise (see here for last encounter)! Thankfully, it wasn't enough to hurt him at all and he was fine, but I was glad to hear that they don't keep track of how often you call poison control...

So I hang up with poison control, sort of proud that I was smart enough to give him a bottle before calling (because the first thing they told me to do was give him liquids). Remember how pride can be not such a good thing? Maybe this day is supposed to be one of those days where you learn lessons, like not to be prideful. Carter was on the couch and shaking the last of his bottle onto the cushions. There is a huge puddle of milk all over the couch and dripping off into the bucket of blocks by the couch (see picture). Let's just say that we spent a lot of time in time-out today... including after Carter tried to bite me each time I got him out of the crib after previous time-outs. Good times!

"Beese"

Carter was never hooked on the pacifier. He didn't mind it every once in a while as a tiny newborn, but he was ready to move on from it pretty quickly. However, last week, I was bagging up some newborn things to pack away until the next baby comes along, and Carter saw the colorful binkies in the bags I was putting away. He freaked and started trying to get them out of the bag. He wanted two or more at a time -- as many as he could get his hands on. I think he's noticed some kids just do it that way...well, at least one kid we know -- a certain cousin of course (Oh, and by the way, Kim -- he even started calling them B's or "Beese" like L). So this week, he's liked them. Weird. He's 17 months old! Why start now? Well, it's not like it's a new addiction or anything, he just likes to pick them up once or twice a day to chaw on for a minute. Whatever floats your boat kid!
