Halloween 2009 Trunk-or-Treat

We had a great time at the annual ward trunk-or-treat and Halloween party at church. Carter got to have his face painted, win a cupcake on the cake walk, go through the spook alley with dad, participate in the donut-on-a-string contest, and many other festivities! Then there was the traditional costume parade and the trunk-or-treat.
I love seeing all the cotumes more talented mothers come up with for their kids (cough*Kristi P.*cough). I went the easiest route possible this year and was fine with it, but might need to start getting more fancy when Carter can start telling me what he actually wants to be. Luckily, this year he didn't seem to mind what I chose. Besides, he needed some new PJs!
And speaking of costumes, I was a cat...
Thanks to my rockin' mom who taught me young how to rat my hair properly. And I can't believe I am posting this incredibly unflattering picture of myself, but it is exclusively for my favorite sister. I hope she fully appreciates it.
To my dearest Marci, MEEE-OW!

Spotlight Saturday - Doug & Marianne

Doug & Marianne are a great couple in Colorado hoping to adopt. Please take a moment to get to know them. You can find out more about them and contact them by visiting: marianneanddoug.com

Update: Congratulations to Doug & Marianne! They adopted a girl in May!

We are excited to get to know you and to become good friends along this road called life.

We have spent time learning all about adoption. We love what we have learned so far and want to share the joy of adoption with everyone we meet. We are blessed with the struggle of unexplained infertility and embrace the unknown road ahead.

We both enjoy traveling and meeting new people. Together we have been to several European countries and about half the United States. Our passion for traveling led us to each other. We were both studying German (as a minor) at Brigham Young University and found each other in our neighboring apartments. We knew we were meant for each other from the first date.

You can think of us as a dynamic duo. We are best friends and love playing and working hard together. We love children and we want to create a laboratory of love in our home where children can grow in security and love.

Doug enjoys singing, Calvin & Hobbes comics, peanut butter cookies, running, and being silly. He thinks fun is often the most effective teacher.

Marianne likes photography, volleyball, dancing, family history research, and training our dog, Lady. She is our personal party planner.

Over the last 6 years of marriage, we have cultivated our common interests and created our family traditions. We have been lucky enough to spend time together in church callings, carpooling to work, and running races. Together we have learned to dance, train our dog, and design our house. Marianne is the one who develops our design plans and has done the research. Doug is the one who has the skills to get the job done. A few examples of our daring deeds including some furniture upholstery projects, landscaping our backyard, and growing a thriving garden.

We want you to share with you all our joys and hopes for our future family. We have compiled a list of core values that we live by, which you can read more about at our website: www.marianneanddoug.com.

We have testimonies of the Savior of Jesus Christ. We will teach our children that they were “hand-picked” by their loving birth parents to be in our home. We will encourage our children to be positive role models who support and uplift those around them.

With warm hearts and best wishes,
Doug and Marianne

Trick-or-treating at Dad's office 2009

Carter caught on after Shane's office Halloween event last year. Every time we went to pick Shane up from work since last Halloween, Carter would tell me he wanted to go IN to Daddy's work, not just TO Daddy's work. We had to tell him over and over again all year long that it wasn't Halloween yet, but that we would be sure to take him back to Daddy's work when they gave out candy again. It was a close call. He almost got grounded from the party because he was being a bit naughty the morning of the big day, but we made it after all -- only an hour late!
Here I am with my cute little skeletons as we left the house:
Carter is always excited to visit our friend Ben in his cubicle:
Carter and Shane before we went in:
And hanging out in Dad's cubicle before we went home:
The best part for us as parents was that Carter actually did what he was supposed to do -- went from cube to cube trick-or-treating and saying thank you (most of the time), without stopping to try and eat every piece of candy like last year. Miraculously, he also didn't try to trade each piece he was given in for bigger or better stuff this year.

Spotlight Saturday - Lily wants big-sisterhood!

Josh, Andrea & Lily

Josh and Andrea are passionate about adoption and volunteer a lot of their time to serve as the local Families Supporting Adoption representatives. Their little Lily is as cute as they come. You can find out more about them and contact them by visiting:

andreaandjosh.com

Hello!

My name is Lily. My Mom and Dad are looking forward to bringing home a new little brother or sister for me, so I thought I'd help out by writing you a letter about our family. (I may be only a year old, but I'm a good helper already.) Besides, I think we're a pretty cool family, and I'm very excited to become a big sister!

My Mom Andrea and my Dad Josh are my favorites. When I was born, Mom quit her job to stay home with me, so we get to play together a lot. She's teaching me my colors and helps me with my animal sounds. She also reads to me all the time. I love cuddling with her when she tells me a story. I am sure she knows my favorite book, The Muffin Man, now by heart.

Mom also takes pictures of me almost every day so she can post them on the blog she keeps for my birthparents. She says she really likes photography and that the blog is a great way to record all of the great things I do. She also uses the pictures she takes to make photo books. That's one of her many hobbies. I hope she teaches me how one day.

Dad is the best when it comes to giving me baths. He and Mom trade off, but he lets me get everything all wet. I have so much fun splashing and playing with all my duckies. When I'm all done he's great at getting me into my jammies and helping me settle down for bed. He gives the best goodnight hugs and kisses.

Dad also loves music so he's pretty good at pat-a-cake. Sometimes he even sings and plays the piano for me and Mom. One day he'll teach me to play my favorite song "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," but first I have to learn not to pound on the keys, even though I think it sounds fabulous. What I'm really good at though, is dancing. You should see me move my hips as I rock out with my maracas and tambourine. I think they named that ABBA song, "Dancing Queen," after me.

One of Dad's favorite things to do is to work on the computer. He's been practicing building websites and editing videos, the star of which is usually Yours Truly. Since he graduated with his Master's Degree, he actually has more time to spend on all of his hobbies like cooking and foreign languages. I like it when Dad cooks because he makes a mean stir-fry. I might get rice all over, but I sure enjoy eating it. I can't wait until I'm old enough to help him make some yummy Chinese food!

Our house isn't huge, but it is comfortable and in a quiet neighborhood. Mom and Dad remodeled much of it before I came along. They painted, installed hardwood floors and even added a pool fence so I'll stay safe. Mom says "If you can survive a home remodel, you can survive anything." All that craziness didn't stop Mom from turning my room into a jungle when she heard I was coming though. I've got vines hanging from the ceiling, jungle animals to keep me company and lots of pictures from our trips to the zoo. I must be a really lucky to have such a fun jungle-themed room.

As a family, we travel a lot. I've only been to 7 states so far, but I'll be getting my passport soon, just in case we want to visit another country. Mom and Dad have their eyes on another trip to Italy. I'm a big fan of pasta so Italy would work for me. Wherever we go I'm sure Mom will have a great trip planned and Dad will do a great job speaking the language. After all, I've got to get a jump on those "1000 places to see." Hmmm...Where to next?

If you want to know more about our family you can email or IM my Mom and Dad. I'd say you could call me, but I haven't quite mastered talking into the right end of the phone and I'm not the best typist yet. But, I know they'd be happy to answer any questions you have and tell you about their plans for an open adoption. They really love adoption, especially since it's the reason they have ME! We are all ecstatic about the idea of growing our family through adoption.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Even though I can only keep my arms folded for a moment or two, I know my prayer still counts. I can't wait to be a big sister.

With Love,

Lily (and my parents, Josh and Andrea)

At the Beach

We only had an hour or so to visit the beach before heading home,
but we loved every minute of it!

Carter quickly makes friends wherever he goes. (Especially when said friend-to-be has a toy).

More Fun with the Kids

Here are just a few more pictures from our visit to Chad and Nicole's. It was such a fun, fast trip!

I don't know what's funnier about this picture, the fact that it took 3 boys to take down Mikelle, or the fact that one is dressed as a vampire...

Can you believe Cole is only 11 in this picture? He's so tall now, that I borrowed his church clothes while we were there.

Spotlight Saturday - A Great Couple Hoping to Adopt

Eric & Sharmayne

Eric and Sharmane are a fun-loving couple in New Mexico. You can find out more about them and contact them by visiting:

http://tinyurl.com/ericandsharmayne

Update: Congratulations to Eric & Sharmayne! They adopted a girl in March!

Hello, we are Eric and Sharmayne. We have been married for eight years, and they have been the best years of our lives. During that time we have both grown in so many ways, both as individuals and as husband and wife. We began our marriage with the desire to have children, for reasons beyond our own understanding we were given the challenge of infertility. This was a struggle for both of us at the beginning, but now we have come to terms with it, and are ready to move on and pursue adoption as a way for our family to grow.

We have gained a great appreciation for the sacrifice given by birth parents, for they truly are giving of themselves to allow the child to have the very best opportunities in life. We have friends who have adopted through LDS Family Services and they have been blessed with wonderful children. They have mentioned to us the love they have felt for God putting into the hearts of the birth parents the desire to provide the child with a better life.

We were both raised in good homes, with parents and siblings who have shown great support and love for us throughout our lives. Sharmayne comes from a large family with eleven children, while Eric is the only boy in a family with three girls. We were both taught the value of hard work and to pursue goals. Sharmayne received her Associate Degree in Graphic Arts with High Honors. Eric was able to get a Bachelors Degree in Accounting while both working and going to college full-time. Eric is an auditor for the federal government.

We each have different hobbies. Sharmayne enjoys the arts, while Eric is more interested in playing and watching sports. Sharmayne plays the piano, sings, and draws. She also enjoys decorating the house and keeping it looking nice. Eric enjoys reading and occasionally playing video games.

In church activities Sharmayne is a teacher for eight year olds. Sharmayne has in the past played the organ, piano, and worked with young women and children. Eric served as a missionary in Argentina for two years and worked with the young men and missionaries.

Family is the most important thing to us, and for this reason we look forward to sharing our love with a child.

With Love,

Eric and Sharmayne

Saturday Sports with California Cousins

I love all my siblings and respect and look up to them so much! I always treasure the short visits we have throughout the year. I not only love spending time talking with them, but I love to watch them interact with their children and spouses. I think I have really taken a lot from them as we've become a family and began to raise our kids. I love that about being the youngest.

This is Chad. He's one of my four big (big as in older and also literally) brothers. We spent a majority of the day Saturday being able to go to the football and soccer games of three of Chad's five kids. Just like their parents, they are all hard-working and exceptional athletes. What a treat to be able to see some of each of their games!

Mikelle, Chad's only daughter, had a soccer game. She had at least one goal and possibly others, or at least she assisted others. This is her first year playing and you would NEVER know it watching her lead the pack on the field!I love this idea -- the parents all made a tunnel after the game for the girls to run through.
What a sweetie. She was such a good cousin to both of our kids this weekend.

Next was Ty's football game. Ty is eight. I can always remember how old he is because he was born when we were engaged. He is like Chad's little (except not so little) clone! If you knew Chad when he was younger, and even now, you can see it just in the picture. The older Ty gets, the more clear it gets. Ty even seems to move like Chad to me now. I loved seeing him in full pads and all for the first time. Makes me think of his daddy playing high school and college football. I remember as a little girl always wanting to give Chad a big hug after his games, even though he always was soaked with sweat and pretty dirty. My heart always swelled up with pride that he was MY big brother and I always wanted to get that sweaty hug to show everyone that he was my brother!

Ty's team lost, but the first thing Ty told me in an upbeat voice after the game was that they might have lost, but he had some really great sacks! I loved his positive attitude! So much focus seems to be placed on winning these days and I was know that he sees things int he proper focus. He's such a good kid.And isn't that black under the eyes just killer?!

Meanwhile, the little boys were having the time of their lives roaming the sidelines...

And lastly, sweet, handsome Cole had a game later in the afternoon. Isn't he {to die for} cute? Can you believe he is just 11? Well technically, he'll be 12 in a few days. If we hadn't visited at this same time last year and seen him then in his football pads and uniform, I would have been COMPLETELY blown away by this kid. However, I was already somewhat prepared for how much he's grown up. Still, I remember the day he was born, and playing with him as a baby. He's still the sweetest guy ever, but now he's got teenage swagger. Makes me feel SO old.

Cali Girl

Shane and I decided to take the kids "Out West" for a couple of days. My brother Chad and his sweet wife Nicole live in San Clemente, CA and we had been trying to get out to visit them for months. Of course Aunt Nicole had the perfect props (animal print and feather throw in an antler basket) for some cute photos of Ruby first thing! Of course we took a whole slew of photos, but here are a couple of our favorites.

Apparently, she was exhausted from all the posing and we found her asleep in her hammock like this shortly thereafter.

Martha Stewart I Am Not

This may be the single tip that you see coming from the kitchen of Shane, but I've tried a lot of ways to cut a pineapple, and finally found one that works well.

Remove the top and quarter it lengthwise.

Slice it up in cubes before removing the rind.
This makes it quick and easy to cut the chunks the size you want.

Peel back the rind while slicing off the chunks.
This flattens out the curve in the rind so you don't waste a lot, or end up with any "eyes" in the chunks. Works for me!

All Gussied Up

These pictures are so yummy to me. When I look at them I get all warm and fuzzy inside and think of how blessed I am. My heart gets all full and I cherish the title "Mama" and everything that comes along with it!

We went to the park for park day today with friends from church and little Ruby was the sweetest, happiest, most peaceful little thing. Plus, I got to get her all dressed up fancy!
